On Saturday the 17th of June 2017 we had our first repair café style event as part of the repair Co-Op held at the Waikato Environment Centre. We had four areas operating for repair. Electronics, Textiles, Jewellery and Wall fixing (Gib Stopping).
The advertising for the lead up to the event was great, Tania, Shepherd and I filmed a short video promoting the event. The video reached 1040 views with 24 shares via Facebook. I also had the opportunity to talk about the event on FreeFM 89.0 with the Cosmopolitan News & Views show. I really didn’t know how it was going to turn out, but I was optimistic.
When I arrived on the day the room was a hive of activity with everyone setting up the equipment at their various repair stations. Tania had her sewing machine, and Anne-Marie her jewellery tools. Shepherd was set-up with a piece of Gib with holes cut out ready to teach people how to fix them. Dominik and Isaac had their different soldering irons and other tools. The room filled up with approximately 15 people. People brought items along and were able to get assistance on getting them mended or repaired. My favourite pair of headphones received some much needed TLC. I really appreciate that Isaac was able to get both ears going with some handy work with the soldering iron, it’s given the headphones a new lease of life!
It was a really fun event, with the two hours flying by quite quickly. Skills were shared, friendships formed, items repaired and mended including clothing, teddy bears, a necklace, computer, laptop, an I Pad, headphones, heater, a chair and a wall! I would really like to thank all who supported and attended the event. I would also like to thank the Waikato Environment Centre for hosting the event! The next event will be on the 22nd of July at the Western Community Centre. If you would like to attend or be involved in anyway, Get in touch.
